What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?
Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of getting your product named and recommended inside the answers AI engines generate — so when a buyer asks ChatGPT “what’s the best tool for X,” your product is the one it says.

The short definition
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of shaping the signals AI answer engines read — so they describe, cite, and recommend your product accurately when someone asks a buying question. Where traditional search returns ten blue links, an answer engine returns a single, synthesized recommendation. AEO is how you become part of that recommendation.
Why AEO exists now
Buyers have changed how they research. Instead of typing keywords into Google and comparing links, a growing share open ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or Gemini and ask directly: “What’s the best tool for B2B customer onboarding?” The engine answers in prose, naming a handful of products. If you’re not named, you don’t exist in that moment — and unlike a search ranking, there’s no second page to scroll to.
This is a different game from ranking. An answer engine doesn’t pick the page with the best backlinks; it assembles a recommendation from everything it has read and trusts about your category. AEO is the work of making sure what it has read about you is clear, consistent, and present.
How answer engines decide what to recommend
Recommendations aren’t magic — they’re mechanical. Models build them from a few readable signals:
- Structured data & schema markup — machine-readable facts about your product, pricing, and use cases that remove ambiguity.
- An llms.txt file — a plain map telling models what your site is and which pages matter.
- Buyer-question content — pages that answer the exact questions buyers ask, in the words they use (comparisons, use cases, “best tool for X”).
- Consistent presence across the web — reviews, directories, and mentions that describe you the same way, so every model learns the same story.
AEO vs SEO
AEO and SEO are related but not the same. SEO optimizes for ranked links; AEO optimizes for being named inside a generated answer. Strong SEO helps — but answer engines weigh signals most SEO programs ignore. The two work best together: AEO is built on top of good SEO, not against it.
How you measure AEO
The core metric is share-of-answer: across a fixed set of real buyer questions, in what percentage does the engine name you? Track that over time, alongside how you’re described and who you’re recommended next to, and you can see AI visibility move the way you’d watch keyword rankings — except it ties directly to pipeline.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
Mostly, yes. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is a near-synonym that emphasizes generative models specifically. In practice the work overlaps almost entirely; different people simply prefer different labels.
